Vertigo's Theme

One theme in Vertigo is the cryptic nature of appearances.  We notice this right in the beginning of the film in the credits in which there is a woman's face with no emotions, then a shot of her lips, and lastly of a nervous looking eye darting all over the place.  Then we notice in Midge's apartment that Scottie appears to be recovered from the fearful rooftop experience but we soon realize this is not the case.  This shows that Scottie hides the madness on the inside by keeping a good looking exterior form.  We also notice a similar thing with Midge who is actually a romantic person inside but we could never tell from her outward appearance.  Midge becomes outraged when her painting of her head on Carlotta's portrait causes Scottie to leave her apartment.  Midge then throws her paintbrush at her reflection in the window which is an attempt to break the mask that Scottie sees and not understanding and really seeing her true identity.  Lastly we see Madeleine's character as nothing but only an appearance.  She is made up merely on the story of a dead woman.  Judy and Madeleine's demise is caused by Scotties attempt to understand and pierce her appearance.  At the end of the film after Scottie has dragged Judy all the way up the steps of the bell tower she no longer has a good hold on her true identity.  We notice this because she alternates between speaking as Judy and Madeleine.  I would rate this movie a 7.5/10.
